When we think of rain, we usually think of clear, clean water, but that is usually not true – especially in the city or in places where there are plants and factories that put smoke and other things into the water and air. The dirt, dust, and chemicals travel up into the atmosphere with water. These tiny particles become part of the clouds, which also makes them part of the rain that falls.
One more kind of dirty rain is acid rain. It is caused by tiny amounts of acidic chemicals released while burning fossil fuels. It's been blamed for many ecological problems. They include the destruction of coral reefs, which play an important part in protecting coastlines from tropical storms. Acid rains also put plants and animals at risk. People must stop air pollution to save our planet for future generations.
Трудные для произношения слова. atmosphere [ˈætməsfɪə], particles [ˈpɑːtɪklz], acidic [əˈsɪdɪk], chemicals [ˈkemɪkəlz], ecological [ˌiːkəˈlɒdʒɪkl], coral [ˈkɒrəl], coastlines [ˈkəʊstlaɪnz], tropical [ˈtrɒpɪkl], generations [ˌdʒenəˈreɪʃnz].
На что обратить внимание. Перечисление «The dirt, dust, and chemicals» — три подряд идущих существительных с ровной интонацией. Противопоставление «but that is usually not true» после запятой. Вводный оборот «especially in the city or in places where…» произносится отдельным тоном после тире. Неопределяющее придаточное «which also makes them part of the rain that falls» отделяется паузой перед «which» — без неё меняется смысл.
