Пропуск находится в четвёртом абзаце: ...at last the girls were given 34 ______ to go for a shortened lunch break....
В тексте указано, что из-за наплыва покупателей у них не было утреннего перерыва (there was no chance of a morning break), но позже им всё же разрешили (were given permission) пообедать.
Таким образом, только слово permission логически и грамматически вписывается в структуру предложения were given permission to go.
