A busy day

“I’ve never 31 ______such a queue! Do they think we’re going to be giving the stuff away or something?” Anna asked her friend Lucy.

Ответ находится в пятом абзаце текста, в реплике Люси: “I could 35 ______ calm them down.”
I could hardly calm them down переводится как «Я едва смогла их успокоить», что идеально подходит под описание напряженной ситуации в магазине, где покупательницы чуть не подрались из-за платья (two ladies almost come to fight over a dress).
I nearly calmed them down (без could).
