Victoria and Mary were going up one of the tallest towers in America, called Willis Tower. First, they had to stand in a long line to enter the building. В данном задании проверяется знание устойчивых фразовых глаголов. Пропуск находится в первом абзаце, в предложении: «...she found 32 ______ that at 455 feet, they were at the height of the Great Pyramid of Giza...». По контексту героиня узнает новую информацию, изучая факты на экране во время подъема на лифте.
Для выражения значения «узнавать», «выяснять», «обнаруживать информацию» в английском языке используется фразовый глагол find out. В тексте он употреблен в прошедшем времени: «she found out that...».
Рассмотрим, почему другие варианты не подходят:
- Вариант 1 (about) не подходит, так как глагол find about не существует как устойчивое сочетание. Можно сказать find out about something, но в данном предложении после пропуска сразу идет придаточное предложение, вводимое союзом that.
- Вариант 2 (over) не подходит, так как сочетание find over не имеет значения «узнавать».
- Вариант 3 (down) не подходит, так как глагол find down не является устойчивым фразовым глаголом с требуемым значением.
Таким образом, только послелог out образует с глаголом find логически верную конструкцию, означающую получение новых сведений.
