33 ______ , the game had taken her far from home...».
В предыдущем предложении говорится, что в родном языке девочки даже нет слова для обозначения шахмат: «There is no word for chess in the girl’s native language». Далее следует мысль о том, что, вопреки этому факту, игра позволила ей путешествовать по всему миру: «the game had taken her far from home, first to Sudan and Turkey, and finally to Russia».
