My day

Classes started today, on Thursday, but my first class with Professor Hunt wasn’t until the forthcoming Monday. After a light breakfast I went back to my room and began working. Not until almost four in the afternoon did I finally close my books. When I 30______ out of my window, it was as if I’d just woken up, sleepy and disoriented, to find it was getting dark. It was high time for dinner.

It was the big back-to-school dinner that night $–$ roast beef, green beans and cheese soufflé. I ate dinner alone at the same table where I’d had my breakfast. I 31______ the food and the atmosphere. The halls were packed, everyone was smoking, laughing. People were walking from group to group saying “Hello”. Suddenly I saw Victor Porter and Peter Wilson 32______ their way to my table. One was the son of a movie producer, the other was the son of a famous racket boss. They were, 33______, president and vice-president of the Student Council. Both 34______ their fathers a lot.

Victor held out a box full of change and crumpled bills. “Hi, guy,” he said. “We’re 35______ a party in the sculpture studio tonight. Want to give something?”

I put down my coffee and fished in my jacket pocket and found a quarter and some pennies. I didn’t say a word.

“Oh, come on, man,” Peter said. His voice 36______, there was a threat in it. “You can do better than that.”

“Sorry,” I said, pushed back from the table, got my coat and left.
